In April we began a period of engagement on a new Local Transport Plan, seeking views from the local community to understand their views on transport and travel in the area.&nbsp;The engagement period has now come to an end, and we want to say thank you for taking part. Yours was one of over 2500 responses received which gives us a real insight into your priorities as we begin preparing the first draft of the plan in the weeks ahead. &nbsp;The plan will guide future policies and priorities on all forms of transport in Central Bedfordshire, including roads, electric vehicles, public rights of way, cycleways, and public transport.Once we have prepared the new Local Transport Plan there will be a public consultation so you can have your say on the draft document – this is planned for summer 2025. Thank you again for your contribution and we hope you will take part at that stage.Meanwhile, today sees the launch of a 10-week engagement period on another important document for the future of Central Bedfordshire – our new Local Plan, which is a blueprint for growth in the area. We’ll be publicising it through all our channels, including email – and you’ll be able to sign up for updates about that by email and even WhatsApp!

What is the Local Transport Plan?

The Local Transport Plan (LTP) is a high level policy document that sets the direction for how the Council manages transport in Central Bedfordshire. It encompasses all forms of transport, whether that&#39;s active travel (walking, wheeling or cycling), driving a car, taking public transport, or new and emerging technologies. That said, we have a lot more control over some of those than others - while we own most of the roads we have far less say over the railways, or the government&#39;s legislation on new ways of getting around.The LTP will say what is more (or less) important as the transport system develops and evolves, and set out principles that will guide how the Council spends money on transport facilities and services. This then guides the Council&#39;s other more detailed transport policies, from Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plans to the Road Safety Strategy.The LTP will include an &quot;Infrastructure Delivery Plan&quot; pointing out any &quot;major schemes&quot; that we believe are needed, where changes to transport would need more than &pound;5million spending on improvements.We are legally required to have an LTP by the Transport Act 2000.
